Colours out of Space: the art of Eugene von Bruenchenhein (1910 - 1983)
A native of Wisconsin, von Bruenchenhein lived a somewhat isolated life, dedicated to his art, his wife Marie (who was the subject of thousands of nude photographs), philosophy, poetry and his work in a bakery. He developed a unique technique of using very thin oil paints, and quickly smearing the colours over the canvas using his fingers. By this method, he produced a prolific number of intensely expressive and vibrant pieces, evoking visions of space, deep-sea monsters, strange plants, apocalypse, and in later years city forms and nuclear imagery. He also took to sculpting models of towers and chairs out of chicken bones, for which he gave himself the title ‘bone artifacts constructor’.
Though always sure of his talent, his work did not receive wider attention until after his death.
In dreams we float
To other worlds
And other shores,
To salvage what we may,
To build and beautify
Our night of life.
